Over dozens of hours in May, the Arizona Correctional Peace Officers
Association Political Action Committee interviewed 49 candidates for elected
office and came up with recommendations that were adopted by the Executive
Board at the June 14th meeting. These recommendations are listed below, but
it should be noted that our questionnaire was sent to all legislative
candidates and those who responded were provided the opportunity to
interview with us in person. It is worth noting that most of the respondents
to the questionnaire are representing the Democratic party.
To arrive at the recommendations, the only information that was considered
was where they stood on labor issues effecting our membership. Party
affiliation was of no concern as long as they supported us. Unfortunately,
the party in power has been quite unsupportive of labor unions and our
department with it’s effort last year to privatize our jobs. The
privatization issue should still be of major concern to us with the governor
having a commission that is supposed to recommend by the end of the year
what state services should or could be privatized. As we already know, they
attempted to do this to our department last year, so there’s no reason to
think our department will not be on the list of recommendations.
This is why the 2010 election is more important to us than at any other
time. If we don’t succeed in removing some of the politicians from office
who threatened our department, the future will almost certainly be more grim
than ever.
Do what you can to donate any spare time you have for the candidates we have
endorsed, especially in the governor’s race. Let them know you’re a member
of AZCPOA whenever you do so they will remember who helped them get in
office. This will be our strength come next year.
Also, mention these candidates to your friends and family members and ask
them to support these candidates, at least by voting for them in the
election.
If you’re not sure of what legislative district you live in, click on the
following link to find out. Then look to see if we have endorsed a candidate
in your district. Spread the word to all of your neighbors and friends who
live nearby to maximize our influence. This is the only way we can increase
our job security and improve our working conditions.
